Introduction

This section is written by Teleschope

Victoria Junior College is a highly selective, coeducational junior college in Singapore offering pre-university education to boarding and day-students. Founded in 1984 , VJC is famous for their strong school spirit. VJC offers a two-year programme leading to the GCE A-Level examinations. Her students come from more than 50 secondary schools all over the island. In fact, more than 60% of her intake comes from the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE), ensuring a rich cultural and social diversity. Her students consist of Victoria School IP boys, Cedar Girls’ Secondary School IP girls by the Victoria-Cedar Alliance Integrated Programme (VCA IP) and O-level students too.

Q1. Describe your school culture

Qn: Describe your school culture
Qn: Describe your school culture

Everyone is like a family

Very supportive of each other

Exudes excitement, people are open for conversations even when you don’t know them very well.

My favourite events were Orientation (JCO) and Victorian Affair(VA) because of the…

raving culture that’s really unique to our school

It’s like safe clubbing before actual clubbing

Q2. Why did you choose VJC?

Qn: Why did you choose VJC?
Qn: Why did you choose VJC?

Firstly, I chose jc over poly because I had good grades to be able to be admitted into VJC and I loved a challenge as I heard that JC would be harder than poly.

I loved the school culture of VJC and I chose it because of its good school name too. I did a lot of research on different JCs before choosing VJC

More choices, unsure of career path so JC is a good buffer (than poly), also you get to experience typical school life for the last time.

Also, I just liked the school environment, people and spirit when i first came for open house in 2018.

VJ gave the kind of excitement other JCs’ open house didn’t have

Q3. How is the academic rigour? Is everyone fixated on results?

Qn: Is everyone fixated on results?
Qn: Is everyone fixated on results?

Quite intense academic rigour.

Very competitive

Not gonna lie for me it’s not stressful.

VJ gives their students a lot of leeway for self-directed studying

There are also lots of materials like topical revision books for math and supplementary worksheets for physics and chemistry for you to do for yourself

Q4. Was the it tough to get into a CCA?

Qn: Was the it tough to get into a CCA?
Qn: Was the it tough to get into a CCA?

Depends on what CCA you are interested in. For debate , it wasn’t that hard, as long as you have a passion for it :)

Iglobe — interview but i think it’s just to check your commitment. Writers’ circle — easy, just join. Student Council — i guess it’s hard to campaign if you’re shy and don’t know a lot of people. Well i don’t know a lot of people but i wasn’t shy sooooo, you can see where that got me. I also made lotsa friends from campaigning and sc itself

Q5. Is it competitive to get a leadership position in your school?

Qn: Is it competitive to get a leadership position in your school?
Qn: Is it competitive to get a leadership position in your school?

It depends on how others perceive you, how the teachers perceive you and how you put yourself out there to your peers and your teachers.

Can be seen to be hard if you really want the position but think you stand a low chance, matter of perspective probably

Q6. What are some special traditions/ activities your school has?

Qn: What are some special traditions/ activities your school has?
Qn: What are some special traditions/ activities your school has?

My favourite would be Victorian Affair , where its an event held an the end of every year before holidays. You can hype with your friends wildly as the school year ends . Orientation was also fun too. Many activities like dancing around the fountain of wealth were fun

Orientation (JCO) and Victorian Affair(VA) ”

Q7. Is it hard to fit in as a JAE?

Qn: Is it hard to fit in as a JAE?
Qn: Is it hard to fit in as a JAE?

In the beginning, yes it was. However, as we started having classes and events together , I started to realize that…

everyone is the same as we became more integrated together

Nah, it’s just whether you make an effort to talk to them at an appropriate time when they’re not occupied with their IP friends or unless you’re able to talk to them too

Q8. Are tutors easy to approach and open for consultations?

Qn: Are tutors easy to approach and open for consultations?
Qn: Are tutors easy to approach and open for consultations?

The tutors I got are very knowledgable, friendly and helpful

Lectures are kind of boring. Since HBL started I stopped watching lectures LOL

Q9. How flexible is the subject combinations?

Qn: How is the process of choosing your subject combination? Is it flexible?
Qn: How is the process of choosing your subject combination? Is it flexible?

Not very flexible.

I don’t think you can change your subject combi once you have chosen it. You can only drop to H1 or go up to H3

Q10. What is the biggest difference between secondary school and JC?

Qn: What is the biggest difference between secondary school and JC?
Qn: What is the biggest difference between secondary school and JC?

The academic was a huge difference and the friends i had too
